Several novel aspects of light-matter interaction were demonstrated with nanooptics methods in recent years, especially in the domain of ultrafast science. I will introduce methods to confine light to subwavelength spatial and subcycle temporal domains. This way, one can achieve high local intensity (and thus, strong-field processes) with compact femtosecond lasers. New physical phenomena were observed upon the interaction of these electromagnetic fields with metal nanoparticles. After revieweing these, I will show potential applications in nanotechnology, attophysics and optical signal processing.
